Disc brakes
SHB disc brakes for applications in industry are applied by cylindrical helical compression spring or disc spring pack and released by hydraulic or pneumatic cylinders, AC thruster or solenoids. Other releasing devices are available to suit the required use or rating.
Because of certain design features or the high braking energy, disc brakes should be preferred where drum brakes cannot be used. The advantages of disc brakes include following items:
- Higher temperature capacity of the brake disc and brake linings than drum brakes have
- Sliding speed up to 90 m/s at the friction radius
- Higher permitted surface compression of the brake linings and consequently higher braking torque
